Dogsledding in Duluth

ok, ok, so I'm not the most prompt blogger in the world ... I may be the only person writing about dogsledding when it's 60 degrees out and sunny. But I've been a bit preoccupied with work and moving and hadn't gotten around to writing about that Saturday several weeks ago when Matt and I went up to Snowflake to watch some skijoring and dogsledding. It was a warm, sunny day. The snow had been melting for days. In fact, we were surprised there was still enough snow for the event, but Snowflake proved to have quite the snowpack.

We had been told about the event first by our friend Tone, here with his team:

Toivo, shown in front left, is one of my favorite facebook friends!

The second person to tell us about the day was our friend Bruce. We know him through officiating bike races in the cities, and were happily surprised to hear that he was driving up to work as a dogsled race official! (don't tell anyone, but I prefer dogs to bikes!)

This is Bruce with Hannah. We had brought our pup ... after all, she enjoys getting out and we like taking her places. It's always interesting to see what she will do! She was quite happy to sit with me and Bruce (Matt was off taking photos) but she seemed even more happy to bark ... constantly ... at all the athletes! After all, those canine athletes were barking in all their excitement, and she felt compelled to cheer them on. Not sure how everyone else felt about that. When we first showed up we saw a lot of dogs on leashes and thought "great, other people brought their dogs too!" and later found out that all the ones I had thought were spectators were actually racing.

Like this precious little springer.

Cute, perfectly groomed little pup, when sitting on a leash looked like simply a happy companion. When mom changed into ski gear though, look at this guy go! We loved the big flopping ears!

It seems that just about any dog can participate. I thought this dog looked especially happy to be out running:

And this one, clearly setting the pace!

And people of any ages too. The kids seemed so confident for their age!

And this guy ... not only is he dogsledding, but he's got the mukluks to boot (pun intended). A true Minnesotan!

A couple more of Matt's photo that really got my attention ... I love the look of focus, drive, and athleticism in this team ...

... and in this photo, how the dogs feet aren't even touching the ground ...

Great fun for an end-of-winter day, something I'm hoping we can do more of next year!

Kirsten's Birthday

Today is my friend Kirsten's birthday. My friend Kirsten, who I've known since I was 7. My friend I've road tripped and canoe tripped and tripped through life with. I was her maid of honor and she mine. We've been so close my brother calls her cousin, my parents call her niece. This day, April 5, has always felt akin to a national holiday or something. Kirsten's birthday!

Friendships ebb and flow, and Kirsten and I must be at low tide right now. There was no argument or misunderstanding, just a mutual unspoken agreement that Kirsten is focusing inward right now, or maybe outward in a different direction. I called her last summer to tell her of my new job and upcoming move. I've sent emails and an evite to my birthday party. I called her last fall to catch up. All have gone unanswered or unreturned. I'm not keeping score, honestly I'm not. I just remember stuff like that. And I also remember us trying to get together around New Year's, but between trying to figure out who-was-spending-it-where and our drunken housemates, New Year's went by in a blur. Part of me wants to call her today just like I have on April 5 of every year ... and part of me feels I should just let her be.

In some ways it's ok if she is focusing on other things right now. But there's that kernel of me that misses her dearly.

So Kirsten? umm ... if you're listening? Please know that I love you and miss you, and that if I was able to see you on your birthday I'd do just about anything to make it the happiest.
