Short Timer Syndrome

It's hard to believe that everything is falling into place and I'm actually about to do what I set out to do six months ago.

A week ago today, I turned my notice in at the Learning Abroad Center. My last day here is June 2. And from there I start an internship as Community Development Intern at the City of Chaska.

It all seems surreal. I contacted Chaska months ago inquiring about an internship, and worked to gain some experience in areas that I thought would boost my resume (like working with the Minnesota Design Team for instance). And it worked! Not to say it made the application and interview process easy. I was still nervous about the interviews, still applied for 3 internships to boost my chances of getting offers, and remarkably (again like I dream) I got offered all three internships I applied for! I spent a lot of time weighing the merits of each and trying to decide the best place for me. I talked to Matt, my parents, fellow students, and my adviser at the Humphrey. At yet at the end, I'll be exactly in the place I dreamt about months ago.

This summer should be fabulous. 32 hours/week at Chaska, learning all about the city and my new field. My shorter commute gives me 15 hours more each week of time all to myself! Once school starts in the fall, the internship will be reduced to 12 hours/week, enabling me to pursue other opportunities and take classes full-time.

Think my life sounds so interesting?

After my last post I got lots of comments from folks about all the stuff I have going on and how cool it all sounds.

Let me tell ya it ain't that glamorous.

On Saturday I spent a long, cold, rainy day working at the Ken Woods Road Race. I left my house at 6:15 in the morning and didn't finish results until around 9:00 that night! Out along a windy field, battered with rain, the highlights of my day were when there were gaps in between riders and I could go inside the car for a few minutes! Sure, there was the largest Cat 4 women's field I've ever seen (way to go MWCMR!), and there were some cool race stories like the one from my friend and teammate Sarah. But, still, very cold, very wet, very muddy!

Sunday was even MORE thrilling. Roughly 22 hours spent on the couch working on my group project. I took a break to go out to breakfast with Matt, to take a nap in the afternoon, and to whip up some quick soup for dinner. But other than that, it was laying out all the pages for our 90 -page project, and doing some reading, editing, and writing along the way. And photo formatting. The highlight of THAT day was that every 4 or 5 pages I'd call out my progress to Matt, who was at his computer in the dining room. "Page 55!" "Page 61!" And each time I said that Matt would say, "that's good. Making some progress." Exciting days on our street, let me tell you!

The good news is that the project is looking good, and that in a couple weeks it will all be over!

If you want some more exciting stories you should check out the tales of my friends Stacia and Chuck in Italy. We're watching their dog Miranda for them and they have a funny post about what Miranda would want to do while they're away.
